Monday, January 8, 2018, I speak at the American Women’s Club about what we can learn from the Dutch in how to manager water.

Bring in the Dutch!

You hear this rallying cry nowadays in every country suffering from flooding – and there are a lot of them. For centuries the Dutch have been world-renowned for their talent for keeping the water at bay. But as the climate changes, dominion is not enough. The Lowlands, kept dry for centuries with a sophisticated network of dikes and pumps and polders and watermills, is now cautiously letting the water in, even lowering the dikes. The Dutch take a long-term view of water safety, preferring to invest in prevention in a far future to the American approach of repair after the fact.

Tracy Metz is, in addition to being the director of the John Adams Institute, is a prize-winning journalist and author of a number of books, among them ‘Sweet&Salt: Water and the Dutch’.
